Soft Charisma - Life Inside The Robot Man [2008]

This is SC’s latest opus and it is by far his greatest artistic achievement. From Lo-Fi’s slightly clumsy step in the right direction to a full on sprint. This direction is where Soft Charisma should keep heading. If he keeps on writing like this and improving, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him reach the level of indie greats like Adam Green, Lou Barlow and Elliott Smith. This is the indie folk Scott Clark was meant to make and it shows. Three great covers compliment the slew of originals found on this album. This sets the tone for what I imagine will be a bright musical future for this artist. His best yet!

If you like Indie Folk, Anti Folk or any other genre in the myriad of ways to classify independent folk type music, I heartily recommend you check out Soft Charisma.

Zombi / Maserati - Split [2009]

Long in the making, this split LP finally brings together two similarly influenced and equally provocative groups: Athens, GA’s Maserati - with their eternally driving, Krautrock-infused dance anthems - shares the record with Pittsburgh’s favorite Italo-cinema fetishists, Zombi. Maserati contributes a pair of two-part epics that show the band progressing away from the sparkly-clean productions of their past in favor of a grittier, more experimental sound, occupying the unlikely space between the dark garage-pop infectiousness of U2’s “Sunday Bloody Sunday” and the analog synth meditations of Harmonia. On the flipside, Zombi offer a single 14-minute track that slowly and steadily amasses pile of analog synths to build a stage for an extended drum solo (imagine Goblin covering “Moby Dick” and you’re almost there). The marriage of these two bands couldn’t be more perfect, and the inspiration they have brought each other is evident in both the creative exploration and the superior quality of the tracks. Rather that deliver non-album toss-offs, both groups brought top-shelf a-sides, making this split an essential part of each artist’s already rich catalog.

The Long Lost consists of husband-&-wife Alfred (a.k.a. electronic Daedelus) and Laura Darlington. In contrast to the avant-electronics and hip-hop aesthetics of Alfred’s music as Daedelus, The Long Lost is a union of two songwriters & producers with a penchant for sad sounds and delicate, electro-acoustic melodies. Psychedelic lullabies for lovers and the lovelorn. As well as Sa-Ra, Laura has also sung for Flying Lotus. A fascinating and utterly individual project, The Long Lost take the subject of love away from the cliches and hackneyed wailing of the mainstream and reconnect it to those strange and uncontrollable emotions we’re all so in thrall to.

Most Unpleasant Men - Nothing Moves Slower [2009]

In January 2009, Most Unpleasant Men will release their debut album. The Utrecht-based band took the time and made the effort to conscientiously mould their narrative songs. That took a while. They have therefore, appropriately, named the album Nothing Moves Slower.
The title is also a reference to the generally relaxed pace of the songs. However, the addition of strings, wind section and choruses provided all 12 songs with a pronounced sound and proves that slow does not equal lethargic.

Nothing Moves Slower was recorded and mixed by Mathijn den Duijf whom previously worked with C-mon & Kypski, Kyteman and Storybox. Karel de Backer was willing to take care of the mastering. Thanks to the work of both technicians the CD sounds scrupulously clean.
The 5 notable, but in contrast to what the band name implies, cultured young men, enchant their audience with catchy songs that are quick to remember, yet intriguing enough to captivate. In 2008 they proved this in and around Utrecht. After the CD-launch on the 24th of January in Ekko, Most Unpleasant Men will be frequently performing live throughout the Netherlands.
